Character Information
Character Name: Sunset Shimmer
Fandom: My Little Pony: Equestria Girls.

Character History: Sunset Shimmer was originally a unicorn in Equestria, a land of magical ponies. Her last few years in the land was spent being distant to whatever family she had, and being the prized student of Princess Celestia, the alicorn ruler of Equestria. Unfortunately, while Sunset Shimmer was a prodigy of magic, she was a failure in friendship and humility. The lack of humility made her dangerous with power, and friendship, well, that was another issue altogether.

During her studies, she discovered a mirror that Celestria would not explain. In her determination to learn about the mirror, she learned about the possibility to be turned into an alicorn and when she demanded to be granted the power, Celestia finally ended her tutelage and banished Sunset from the castle. Instead of leaving, Sunset broke away from the guards and dove through the mirror. In truth, it was a portal to another dimension that opened once every two and a half years.

As a result, Sunset was stuck in the human world, with no magic, and no one to turn to. However, she was determined to still be the best and powered through how to use her new body, the technology that far outstripped Equestria, and in a few weeks, ended up the most popular girl in Canterlot High. Perhaps things would have been different if she hadn't become the Princess of the Fall Formal. It had been a genuine surprise and had made her happy. And in her pursuit of that feeling, she blackmailed, bullied, destroyed friendships, and divided Canterlot High to remain the supreme ruler of the student body. Though it bears noting for how ruthless she was with everyone, she never once struck out at Flash Sentry after he broke up at her.

Eventually the portal opens again and Sunset sneaks into Equestria. Once there, she hears about Twilight Sparkle, Celestia's pupil after her, who had recently been made an Alicorn princess, and was a bearer of an Element of Harmony. It acted as her crown and Sunset took the opportunity to steal it and bring it to the human world to amass an army to take over Equestria. Unfortunately, in all the confusion, the crown gets lost on school grounds and taken to the principal. Who mistakes it for the Fall Formal crown and locks it up to prevent another theft. The only way to get the crown was to win it on the last day the portal was open. Another problem was Twilight and her dragon Spike had followed Sunset.

Still Sunset continued on. She would win the Fall Formal like always and all she had to do was discredit Twilight as she was the only one running against her under guise of a new student. Unfortunately, Sunset didn't count on Twilight making friends with the first group of girls Sunset had broken up. The girls help Twilight win the crown, forcing Sunset to kidnap Spike to force a confrontation. Though she never did intend to hurt him. As it breaks out into a physical fight, Sunset gets the crown, puts it on...
And is immediately corrupted. The Elements of Harmony require Friendship to work properly and with Sunset's rejection, it tainted the magic. It forces Sunset to confront how empty and lonely she was, the transformation painful. Because in the end, Sunset wasn't evil. What she wanted was fulfillment and happiness and she thought power would get her that. It didn't, instead changing her into a raging she-demon.

Luckily, the Element was inherently part of Twilight and she was able to draw power from it and give it to her new friends. They 'pony up' into half pony girls and are able to purify Sunset through their friendship. Broken, defeated, and absolutely lost, Sunset doesn't know what to do. All she knows is what
she did was wrong.

So when Twilight offers her hand in friendship, she accepts. Twilight has to return to Equestria, but the girls offer to help Sunset learn friendship. For the next few weeks, Sunset works on becoming a better person. Trying to be nicer, more helpful, and be a real friend. Unfortunately, the school doesn't trust her, and the girls are still somewhat wary of her. Still, they try and Sunset tries.

However, soon comes the Sirens. Banished from Equestria years previously, they're called by Equestrian magic and the chance at real power. Around the same time, the girls discover they can pony up when they play their instruments. All when the school has a musical showcase. With the arrival of the Sirens, who feed on Discord, they manipulate it into a battle of the bands. While Sunset and the girls call Twilight back through a magic book, and she figures out a way to open the portal on her end, they're not able to immediately deal with the Sirens. They're forced to compete while looking for a solution and the Sirens start manipulating the people around them to cause discord in the band.

Sunset notices the girls fighting, but due to her past misdeeds, hesitates to say anything. She feels it's not her place, until she realizes the Sirens use that discord to steal their magic and she finally puts a stop to the fighting. They listen to her and Twilight figures out what they need to do and being the magical music fight with the sirens. However, it's not until Twilight calls for Sunset's help they finally have the strength to win, and Sunset is able to pony up herself.

With the defeat of the sirens, Sunset also earns the tentative forgiveness of the school. Over the next few weeks, Sunset learns more about friendship and finds her place in the world as someone who can help others. She ends up joining multiple school clubs and finds her happiness. But with the coming of the Friendship Games, a competition with rival school Crystal Prep, there is concern about the magic the girls have. Especially as they start ponying up at random times. The school doesn't want to be seen as cheating.

Sunset is tasked to find a way to control it. She tries to figure out how the magic works, but it's unpredictable and weird and it frustrates her to no end. To a lesser extent, it also makes her miss Equestria and how she could understand the magic there. Not helped with the arrival of the Other Twilight. Just as the other Bearers had human counterparts, so did Twilight. A student of Crystal Prep, whose noticed the strange readings around Canterlot. She built a device to try and gather data and it ends up absorbing magic. However, it can't properly contain it and the magic leaks out, causing chaos and opening rifts around the competition. Not only that, but it pulled the magic from the portal, scaring Sunset as it closes, especially as Princess Twilight won't answer the magic book.

When Twilight causes a monstrous plant monster to attack a race, including Rainbow Dash and Sunset, and admits to having no idea what she's doing once the situation is under control, Sunset finally snaps. She's frustrated she can't understand or control the magic, she was scared her friends were threatened, and there's someone messing with forces they can't control wearing the face of someone she trusts. She also feels like she's failing the school by letting them be seen as cheaters. She lashes out at Twilight and drives her away, though she immediately regrets the action.

The competition goes on despite the magical interference as Crystal Prep is determined to keep their reputation. Which leads the principal to pressure Twilight into using the magic she's captured to make things 'fair.' Twilight relents, wanting to learn more. And not being good at Friendship.

Sunset is too late to stop Twilight from releasing the magic and is unsurprised by the corruption. Twilight starts tearing holes in reality to Equestria, wanting to learn everything about magic. Sunset watches as everything starts falling apart, and she finally understands why the girls have been randomly ponying up. She grabs Twilight's empty device as the girls go about saving people, expressing friendship and harmony in their own ways, and summoning up their magic. Sunset tries to talk Twilight down, but when it doesn't work, she uses the device to pull the magic to her, to show Twilight what real magic was. Finally understanding Friendship, Sunset able to utilize the Magic of Friendship fully, now a half alicorn instead of a she-demon. She fixes the tears and fights Twilight until she shows she can win with a little help from Twilight's own version of Spike.

And just light Princess Twilight, Sunset holds out her hand to Twilight, and she accepts.
The Friendship Games end on a truce with Crystal Prep, the students making friends with each other. Twilight decides to transfer to Canterlot to learn more about friendship and maybe magic. She also gets a brief meeting with Princess Twilight, who had been busy with a crisis in Equestria at the time.
Some weeks later, and more bonding, the girls go to Camp Everfree. Only a short time after their arrival, the girls start displaying more powers without need of music or performing certain acts. First is Twilight with telekinesis, who freaks out and swears Sunset to secrecy. Sunset respects her wishes, but is confused. Magic doesn't have to be a bad thing, after all.

Slowly, all the girls start showing signs of magic, and things go wrong around the camp. Things that Twilight blames herself for, thinking it's her corrupted self, Midnight Sparkle, trying to take control. Sunset, however, is more concerned with helping everyone not freak out entirely about their magic. It's not until Twilight tries to run that Sunset figures out her power; empathy. She's able to see the memories and thoughts of people so she can understand their feelings. She finds out about Midnight Sparkle and convinces Twilight to stay. Unfortunately at this time, they run into Timber Spruce, who Twilight was crushing on. And Sunset notices glitter coming from his pocket, apparently leaving evidence of 'Gaia Everfree' who everyone else had assumed was the cause of the problems. Still, not wanting to jump to conclusions and hurt Twilight, Sunset chooses to investigate further.

She also decides trying to avoid the magic wasn't doing any good. She convinces her friends to embrace their magic and use it instead of trying to take a break from it. She shows them how it can help their goals and while going after Twilight to show her the good that can be done, she hears Timber arguing with Gloriosa, his sister, and owner of the camp. She follows him into the woods, and eventually comes across a cave. She calls Twilight to join her and they investigate together, finding magical geodes originating from Equestria. And they find out it was Gloriosa causing problems, using magic to try and make the week the best one ever as she was losing the camp and only caused more problems. Timber was covering for her. Gloriosa takes the last of the magic and, of course, gets corrupted, and starts covering the camp in a thorny dome.

Sunset has to support and show Twilight she can use her powers safely for the sake of their friends, who were trapped in the dome. During the final push, she's able to use her powers to pull their friends into Twilights mind and give her the necessary power to overcome the darkness of Midnight Sparkle so she can pony up for the first time and save the day. The geodes fly away from Gloriosa, becoming pendants for each of the girls, granting them stronger powers and special outfits.

With Gloriosa saved, the students are able to save the camp with teamwork and magic, raising enough money with an impromptu ball and concert. And Twilight even got a date with Timber! Everything seems to be going well, except Sunset has one last question unanswered.

How did the Geodes get there in the first place?

Character Personality: Sunset Shimmer is a girl who has a really hard time doing things by halfs. She's passionate and ambitious and honestly a force to be reckoned with when she has a goal in mind. Which is both a weakness and a strength. On one hand, she's someone who gets things done, even the difficult or seemingly impossible. On the other hand, she tried to take over the world. Even with her reformation, she can become blind to her surroundings in pursuit of a goal and accidentally cause problems that were easily avoidable. Though she is aware of this and has gotten better, mostly by having most of her goals be focused on helping others.

That is perhaps the newest thing about Sunset Shimmer and what she has embraced with relish. Sunset wants to help. She wants to make things better for people and has decided that it's her purpose in the human world. She's fine not taking center stage and while sometimes she does miss standing out, she finds more longterm satisfaction in helping and supporting her friends. Not that she can't take center stage when she needs to, often acting as a leader, but she no longer needs it. And she's grown to be quite emphatic, noticing when people are bothered and always reaching out to help to the best of her ability.

Not that she's completely over some of her less than favorable traits. She has a wicked temper, usually lashing out when she's frustrated or feeling trapped. She tries to reign it in with varying success. She also has a tendency to be extremely possessive of things that make her feel good. It had been her success in magic and winning crowns, but currently it's her possessiveness of her friends and how little patience she has for people putting them in danger. She also has a pretty mean competitive streak when she decides to compete. And while she chooses not to be anymore, she's extremely adept at manipulating people and finding their mental weak points.

With her history of misdeeds, Sunset also has some confidence issues. She's been steadily getting better, but sincere expressions of gratitude or fondness from anyone besides her close friends surprise her. She feels like she has to repent and while she feels like she's making progress, she still feels horrible for what she did and hates how she used to be. She believes she is capable of doing things and getting them done, but she's still not sure if she deserves appreciation for what she does.
But day to day, Sunset is a girl of kind tough love. She doesn't pull punches with people, but she finds a way to put it kindly. She's usually fairly sensible and level headed. Not that she's without her humor. She loves to snark and give light hearted teasing and she absolutely loves the punk style of clothing. She's also extremely curious and loves to learn new things and help others learn to. She still has more things to learn about friendship in general, but she's gotten far in being a good and reliable friend.

Though Sunset is not always good at asking for help herself. She's good in a crisis situation. She knows how to find solutions and get the ball rolling. She knows how to help others and get them help, but Sunset knows to trust and depend on her friends for the greater good situations. She's just used to taking care of herself and dealing with her own problems, and while she knows friendship, she's yet to really need to ask others to help her personally.

Powers and Abilities: Sunset used to be a unicorn of great power. Levitation, teleporting, plant growing spells, and presumably a number of other spells being Celestia's student. Also some theory behind darker magic. She's had years of studying and showed no loss in ability even after a two and a half years away from using magic. As a human, her magic is limited. Mostly it's been to pony up with her friends, and acting as a conduit for all their power with the aid of a magical device. The abilities then included growing pony ears and tail, shooting rainbow lasers, a giant magical alicorn, and being able to heal tears in the world. She's also shown to have the ability to form fire phoenix wings while ponying up solo.

A recent ability that's more stable thanks to a magical pendant is touch empathy. When she touches people with an emotional problem, she's able to hear their thoughts and feelings and even see the memories that lead up to the problem. She can also get a more general view of a person's mental state if they trust her and open her up to her ability.

More mundane abilities is Sunset is brilliant. She's able to become the top student of her High School in a matter of weeks with subjects she didn't know and can memorize an immense amount of information. Mostly thanks to the fact math and science is far easier to memorize than the complexities of magic, which she was also good at. It's also helped her with some computer programming skills.

She can also play the guitar, sing, ride a motorcycle, and knows how to find ways to fake papers since she has to work for a living in another reality.

Network: You know, I'm starting to get jealous. Everytime I go to another dimension, they always seem to have a pretty impressive communication network. Though if this one is working on something more akin to magic, I might have to see if I could set something up for my home dimension.

You know, eventually. It sounds like there's an eventually for stuff like that.

Anyway, my name is Sunset Shimmer, current high school student and sorta magical investigator. I gotta say, this bending sounds fascinating. I know it's technically not magic, but it sounds like it's still another extremely powerful and adaptable force that could be studied. Is there anyone studying? Or a school? Any help would be appreciated.

Otherwise....well, I guess I should make some friends, right? Anyone want to deal with a curious newbie whose past the whole 'I can't believe I'm in another dimension, omg' phase? I promise I can be halfway fun to hang out with.

Third Person: Okay, she would admit it was kind of sad how much she already missed her friends. She knew it was natural to miss her friends, sure, but she's been reading guides and wandering around town, and all she can think about is how much fun they'd have around here. She was sure Rarity would have already found some boutique with plenty of fabric to work with to get some of these people in more tasteful outfits. Pinkie Pie would be working on 'so you're in a new dimension' party. Rainbow Dash would be asking if there was sports teams around. Applejack would be curious if farming was even a thing around here. And Fluttershy would be having an absolute field day with some of these animals and be somewhere between terrified or cooing at those rabbits she's pretty sure have fangs.

And Twilight....

Twilight would be like her. Looking at everything and being so fascinated. How does willpower manifest into reality. Where does the energy come from. How much willpower is needed for what. What is everything made of, is it what people imagine, or is it some versatile element in the air?

She's saddened the most that Twilight wasn't here. It was new magic. Well, they said it wasn't magic, but it was same in basic description. It's something mysterious and powerful and new to understand. She wondered how fun it would be to learn about something so challenging with an intellectual equal at the same time without them always just throwing things at the wall and seeing what stuck.

Mostly, she missed her friends in general. She was so used to them being there, it made an ache in her chest to be away from them.

She took a deep breath, and let it out slowly, looking down at her phone. Then she smiled to herself. "I guess I'm going to keep following in your hoofsteps," she said to herself, thinking of Princess Twilight. First holding out her hands to girls who are lost and now, she's going to make friends across dimensions. After all, that was the beauty about friends. You could always make new friends.

And from the looks of it, there were a lot of new friends to be had. She would see her friends again, she knew she would. They were connected by friendship and as long as she was patient, they would find each other again. Until then, there were new people to meet, to help, and to show the friendship of magic.

After all, it was the kind of magic that always existed, with or without rainbow lasers involved.
