Short Summary
School begins and there's the announcement of the Academic Decathlon as the first event of the Friendship Games. Teams start out at twelve, but only six can advance to the second event. It's Wondercolts versus Shadowbolts. Canterlot High versus Crystal Prep.

Then the events start. (No actual music since there is minimal in the moment singing, just montage.)

It starts with chemistry, moving to baking, then to building a birdhouse. Critical failures are eliminated. Sunset keeps watching Twilight A Lot until she's baking with Rainbow Dash. Who gets her attention about her divided focus.

Sunset says she needs to figure out what Twilight did before the games are over.

Rainbow Dash points over to Micro Chips not doing so well with the baking. If Micro Chips can't get to the finale, then it has to be Sunset Shimmer. It's not magical, but the games are important to everyone.

Sunset Shimmer focuses on winning the events. Her spare time is definitely spent watching Twilight, but when she's competing, she keeps her focus where it needs to be.

Though Twilight certainly doesn't seem to want to be here, often looking at something around her neck.

The spelling bee happens and it's pretty clear why Rainbow Dash wanted Sunset Shimmer to the end because she doesn't hesitate whatever word is given to her. Finally everyone is eliminated save for Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle.

And they're given a math problem to find a bunch of angles in a triangle. Who can find the correct answer first. Which Sunset Shimmer is more than capable of doing. Except she can HEAR Twilight working.

Twilight is faster. By a fair amount, and Sunset has to rush through the work if she's going to beat her. They end at the same time, with different answers. So it comes down to who was right.

Sunset was wrong. Crystal Prep wins the first event.

Rainbow Dash rushes her and compliments her, much to Sunset Shimmer's confusion since they didn't win. Applejack counters that's as close as they'd gotten to beating Crystal Prep.

They're the six who will move on to the third event and despite hating that she loss, it's hard to not be cheered up by everyone else's excitement.
